They should bring a camera (or smartphone, duh) if they'd like to learn a little about news photography. They'll learn a little about Associated Press style, and participate in proofreading the paper before it goes to press. If there's a local area they'd like to write about and file an article for possible inclusion in the paper, I'll provide help and guidance. They will help prep for and conduct at least one interview, and depending on their contributions, may get a byline and/or a photo credit.

Student will observe putting a weekly, hyper-local newspaper together from beginning to end. I work a flexible schedule, which means that while I might be working on Memorial Day, we might take time off to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on a Wednesday afternoon. I do a combination of telecommuting and working in the office, which is about a 40-minute drive away. We might edit freelancers' work, and read and evaluate pitches (proposals for articles from freelance writers). I also edit our bi-monthly magazine, "Healthy Lifestyles," write almost all of its content, and help choose images for it.
